How to decode the serial number
Trane embeds the manufacture date directly in the serial number. The format has been consistent since the 1980s, making Trane one of the easier brands to decode.
1983 to Present
The first two digits are a base-20 year code. The next letter is the month code.
On outdoor AC/heat pump units, the data plate is on the side of the unit near the electrical disconnect.
On furnaces, open the front cabinet door — the data plate is usually on the inside of the door or on the blower compartment.
The serial number starts with two digits followed by a letter. If it starts with letters, it may be an older pre-1983 unit.
Trane and American Standard are sister brands — they use the same serial number format.

Common questions
The first two digits are the year code (which repeats every 20 years — use the age of the unit to determine the correct decade). The third character is the month code (A=January through L=December). The rest is a production sequence number.
13 maps to either 1993 or 2013. H = August. Since a 1993 unit would be over 30 years old, it's almost certainly August 2013 unless the unit appears that aged.
Yes. Trane and American Standard are both owned by Trane Technologies. They use identical equipment with different branding and the same serial number decoding format.
Trane heat pumps typically last 15–20 years. Trane's reputation for durability is well-established — their units often outlast less expensive brands by 3–5 years with proper maintenance.
On rooftop or ground-mounted package units, the data plate is typically on the outside panel facing the access door side. It's a metal or adhesive label with model, serial, refrigerant, and electrical data.
